During the lifetime of kiosk terminals one major factor in their operational cost is the requirement for an engineer to visit the terminals in order to reset them when the computer software inside the terminal has locked up. Not only is this a costly exercise the terminal could remain inoperable for a considerable amount of time before the engineer can visit the terminal.

X2 Connect have developed an additional hardware component which, once installed in the NET800 or a NET1000 terminal, monitors the status of the kiosk hardware to determine when the Single Board Computer (SBC) is no longer responding, this hardware is then able to take the necessary actions required to restart the SBC to get the terminal operational again without an engineers visit. In our current installations where the ARK is used it has been shown to reduce engineer call outs by up to 60%.

When automatic reset events are generated, a report is also sent to the NETms management system. This allows you to track reset events and highlight underlying problems such as impending SBC failures.

The unit (shown below in the NET800) fits neatly into the existing terminals without the need for any mechanical modification. Depending on the version of control module software that you are running, a small software upgrade may be required; contact X2Connect support for details.

Since the NET800 Webphone and Kiosk platform was introduced, the demands of internet content has steadily increased with a high proportion of animated flash content and video streaming now the de-facto standard.
The original VIA C3 based Single Board Computer (SBC) no longer provides the optimum platform for these increased processing demands.
X2 Connect have therefore introduced an upgrade to the original SBC, based on the VIA C7 processor platform and at the same time taken the opportunity to enhance some other aspects of the product family and add greater flexibility for future upgrades. This has however meant that a number of key components require updating:

SBC Enhancements

  • VIA C7 Based SBC with greatly improved RAM capacity
  • New enclosure design facilitating - Better thermal management - Improved access for cabling - Easy access to the hard disk.
  • Mini-ITX footprint SBC to allow a greater range of boards for future upgrade.
  • VIA C7 Chipset: Pentium 4 class performance with ultra low power requirement.
  • Two basic options available: 1.5GHz just 12W power requirement and 2.0GHz with 20W power requirement.
  • Internal 90W power module: requires single 12V DC feed.
  • Hard Disk: The 2.5" format disk has been replaced by a more standard 3.5" IDE disk drive. We have found the standard 3.5" form to be more reliable in the long term.

  • Additional Upgrade Requirements
  • TFT Display. To allow a greater range of SBC boards, the TFT display module must be upgraded to provide a VGA interface. The touchscreen is unaffected and the display panel itself remains the same. The inflexible 'SCSI style' cable is replaced with a simple VGA cable.
  • Isolator PCB. A small modification is required to the isolator PCB. This allows the SBC to have greater control over the new VGA Interface controller
  • COM/PWR/RST Cable. This new cable replaces two existing cables between the isolator board and the SBC.
  • External Power Unit: A new dual output 12V power supply replaces the existing unit and the bulky power harness.
  • Finally an additional DLL is required for the SBC. This can simply be added to the binaries resource pack on the NETms and downloaded to the terminal when the new SBC is commissioned.
  • All the new components use the same mounting points as the original designs.
